Body located in Bras d’Or Lake near scene of missing fisher, Eskasoni, N.S.

A body has been found in Bras d’Or Lake near where a missing fisher was reported to have gone overboard this morning.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., Eskasoni RCMP responded to a call of a small fishing boat that an overturned on the Bras d’Or Lake just off shore of Eskasoni.

Preliminary investigation determined two local fishers were checking lobster traps in a small boat. Around 10 a.m. the boat capsized sending both men in the water. One of the men was able to climb up onto the overturned boat while the other man started swimming toward a small island. The man who remained with the boat lost sight of his companion a short time later. The man stood up on the boat and began waving for help and was eventually rescued to by local citizens from Eskasoni.

A search for the missing fisher began immediately by Eskasoni RCMP, search and rescue aircraft deployed by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), Sydney Mines and Glace Bay Fire Departments.

At 3:20 p.m., a body was sighted by the crew of the Cormorant Helicopter in the water of the Bras d’Or Lake near the scene of the over tuned boat. The Canadian Forces and the Sydney Mines Fire Department are recovering the body from the water.

RCMP have not yet confirmed identity of the remains. The investigation is ongoing.
