Boys and Girls Club to renovate kitchen, tech lab

The Boys and Girls Club on Aldergrove Drive will be doing quite a few improvements and expansions over the next few months. The kitchen is going to be renovated into a larger space with an industrial six-burner stove and two fridges. Executive director Darlene MacLean says the space will be used not only to teach the children's clubs about cooking and healthy foods, but could also be used by the community during the day when the after school programs don't need it. One goal may be to open a soup kitchen in partnership with a nearby church. The appliances have already arrived. The kitchen renovations haven't started yet but the club hopes they will be complete by October. Even sooner than that, renovations are going to start on a new "tech lab," sponsored by Rogers, with 12 new Mac computers. Those renovations start July 22 and should be done by September 1, in time for school to start. The computers will be used for a program called "Raising the Grade," which aims to increase literacy and academic skills for school age kids. The club will also open a satellite location in Fairview, within the Mosaic Church at the corner of Willett and Frederick. ...
