Breakfast Club: The January Detox

A few months ago I stumbled upon an event called Breakfast Club, which was created by Helen over at Fuss Free FlavoursBeing a huge breakfast fan – of every way, shape, and form it comes in – I immediately wrote to her to ask how I could get involved. This happened during my flurry of event sign-ups last fall, so while I managed to score a slot as a host, I wasn’t able to participate until now. Coincidentally, this is both my first time participating in and my first time hosting Breakfast Club.

Breakfast Club: Because breakfast should be more interesting than

tea & toast or coffee & cereal.”

It’s thattime of year, friends. Yep – we all ate too much over the holidays and are now struggling to keep that top button closed, right? Feeling mighty over-indulged? Hmm? Perhaps even guilty? I know I am.

Thus, I present to you this month’s theme: The January Detox.

If you know me even a little bit, you’ll know that I don’t subscribe to dieting, per se; rather, portion control and balance. It’s something I really believe in, whether or not I’m always able to stick to it (like at Christmas!).

The beauty of these healthy breakfast smoothies, however, is that they include all natural ingredients and are jam-packed with vitamins and nutrients, while not at all sacrificing or replacing great taste! I made two smoothies – one flavour for F. and one flavour for me – not realizing at first that they were 2 servings each.

Whatever ‘detox’ means to you, then, the challenge is to devise a breakfast recipe that will help you feel better about all those naughty little treats you tucked into over the holidays. Let’s create some extra-healthy recipes to start our mornings and new year off right!

Almond-Berry Smoothie
Serves 2

2 oz. ground almonds
5 oz. fresh blueberries
4 fl. oz. orange juice
1 ripe banana
7 fl. oz. of full-fat, plain yogurt

Puree all ingredients in a blender until well mixed.

Cran-Avocado Zinger
Serves 2

1/2 piece of avocado, peeled, pitted, chopped
1 Tbs. fresh lemon juice
8 oz. frozen cranberries
8 fl. oz. orange juice
2 heaping Tbs. full-fat, plain yogurt

Puree all ingredients in a blender until well mixed.

The almonds, blueberries, orange juice, banana, yogurt, avocado and cranberries offer you boatloads of antioxidants, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, B-complex, dietary fiber, potassium, folates, probiotic cultures and healthy, monounsaturated fats, which are all necessary for optimum health.

I was satiated for several hours after drinking the Cran-Avocado smoothie this morning, leaving me full to the brim with vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to get through my day.

Do YOU have a great, healthy breakfast recipe to submit to the Breakfast Club? Please, do!
