Broken collar bone incident during arrest triggers investigation

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the serious injury of a male who was arrested by the RCMP.

On December 28, 2023, the SiRT was contacted by the Digby RCMP.  Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • The RCMP were called regarding an impaired driver.
  • There was some struggle during the arrest, and the male was transported to the Digby detachment where he was housed in cells.
  • Emergency Health Services attended, and the male was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken collar bone.

In accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP contacted the SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
