One thing that Halifax has a great selection of, is the wide variety of local craft beers that are available to choose from. Many of these local brews have become extremely popular for many Haligonians.

One place that contributes to the delicious selection of beer is Rogue’s Roost. Located at 5435 Spring Garden Road, Rogue’s Roost not only brews a great selection of beer, but they also have a pretty tasty menu. Wanting to check off another Spring Garden burger, I went with their Swiss & Mushroom Burger.

Appearance (5.75/10)

When the burger arrived at the table, a couple of things stood out to me. The first thing was the fact that the mushrooms were on top of the melted cheese instead of underneath it. It’s not a huge deal, but I’m just used to seeing them underneath the cheese, and it also helps keep the mushrooms all contained on the burger when eating it. Either way, the mushrooms still looked pretty delicious. The second thing, and this is more so a personal issue, is that the condiments were served on the side of the burger. My complaint about this is that when I get a burger, I usually want it served in the way the restaurant/chef wants the customer to experience it. By putting options on the side, it makes it so that there is room for variance between burgers (again this is just a personal thing and I’m sure some people are thankful for the options). Overall though, the burger did still look tasty, and I was eager to start eating.

Taste (6.25/10)

This burger definitely had some pretty positive elements. The patty was nicely cooked and seasoned, and the mushrooms were pretty delicious. If I had to pick one negative thing about the burger, it would be that all of the components between the bun didn’t really come together to form a cohesive taste. They kind of just stood out from each other, and I feel that this burger just needed something else that would bring them all together so that they compliment each other. That aside, I was still pretty happy with how this burger tasted.

Restaurant Atmosphere & Service (7.5/10)

I’ve been to Rogue’s a few times before this visit, and it has always felt very welcoming. I really like the layout of this place as it allows you to either grab a drink at the bar or sit at one of the low-lit tables for a more personal vibe. You can also see into the room where they make their beer, which is a nice touch. The staff is great here and they are always making sure everyone is looked after.

Cost vs. What You Get (6/10)

This burger rings in at $13. This seems to be the average price for a burger these days, which is some cases is a great deal, and in others not so much. When it comes to this burger, it’s hard to argue the fact that you get a good and filling meal for this price, but I would like to see some small tweaks done so that it makes me want to come back and get this burger again.

Overall (6.38/10)

As I already said, this burger is pretty good taste-wise, and there was nothing that really turned me off of it. However, there also wasn’t really anything that made it stand out and make me say “wow”. I would, and definitely will, go back to Rogue’s in the future, even if it’s not for this particular burger. A main draw to this place for me is their beer, and if you haven’t been in to try it yet, you definitely should (I highly recommend their IPA or the Raspberry Wheat).
