Burger #49 – Big Devil Burger (Baton Rouge)

During Halifax Burger Week, some of the participating restaurants opted to have one of their regular menu burgers be their entry for the week. One of these places was Baton Rouge. The name of this burger was titled the Big Devil Burger, and since no one had anything bad to say about it at the time, I figured it was time to go back and give it its own LoB write-up!

Stats

From the menu: “Half-pound of premium beef, fried onion rings, tomato, Swiss ateogyrheese, smoked bacon, sweet & spicy BBQ sauce”

Appearance (8/10)

The Big Devil is a burger that doesn’t mess around. As soon as it was placed in front of me, I knew that this was a burger of hearty proportions. I loved that the BBQ sauce was dripping out the sides, and the melted cheese was a mouth-watering sight. My love of onion rings on burgers is no secret, so seeing the two thick rings on this patty made me a happy guy. It’s safe to say that I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into this burger.

Taste (7.5/10)

After a few bites, I found there was a few elements that I liked about this burger. The BBQ sauce brought a great flavour to the burger that was a really awesome balance between sweet and spicy. The bacon was cooked perfectly, and there was a good amount of it on the burger. I thought that the huge chunks of tomato would be a bit much, but I found that they actually were just the right amount to balance out the meaty components of the burger.

I was slightly surprised by how pink the inside of the patty was. I do enjoy some pink in my burger patty, but I would have preferred to have this one done a bit more as it was rarer than I like. This is obviously a personal choice, but it was still unexpected nonetheless.

Cost vs. What You Get (8/10)

The cost of this burger is $16, which does creep up to the higher price range for burgers. The thing I found with this burger is that it left me with the perfect level of fullness. I didn’t leave needing more, and I didn’t feel uncomfortably stuffed. Aside from the size, the quality of the ingredients was great. I feel as though this price is on-par with the burger.

Overall (7.83/10)

I’m glad I went back and gave this burger some one-on-one attention, unlike Burger Week where it was one of eight burgers I had eaten in a day. I really enjoyed this burger, and while the patty wasn’t necessarily cooked to my liking, I would still recommend giving the Big Devil a try.
