Burger #52 – The Goddess (Papa Joe’s)

Not wanting to waste an opportunity to try another Burger Love winner (check out Burger #51 for more info on Burger Love!) while home on Prince Edward Island, I decided to head over to Papa Joe’s to try their 2012 champ, The Goddess. This family friendly restaurant was fairly busy when I visited, so that was a good sign that I was in for some quality food!

Stats

From the menu: “Mediterranean seasoned Island beef on a toasted ciabatta bun with zatar, garlic sauce, feta cheese, banana peppers, lettuce and tomato”

Appearance (6.5/10)

The Goddess was served to me open, and the first thing you notice is the juiciness of the burger. There was a nice little pile of banana peppers on top of the patty, as well as a healthy serving of veggies. Other than those few points, the burger seemed fairly standard, but with an ingredient list like the one this burger has, I was fairly certain that there was going to be a lot of delicious flavours happening in my mouth.

Taste (7.25/10)

As expected, there was a lot of great flavours to this burger. The Mediterranean seasoned beef, while being cooked a little longer than I would have liked, tasted awesome, and there was a savory composition that you don’t normally find in traditional burger patties. I also really enjoyed the texture of the ciabatta bun, and it held up nicely when faced with the meaty juices coming from the patty.

The portioning of all the ingredients was pulled off pretty well in this burger, with the exception of the garlic sauce, which I would have liked a bit more of. Being someone who is not a huge fan of feta, I was also happy to see that it was very subtle on this burger and not super overpowering.

Cost vs. What You Get (7/10)

The price you’ll pay to try this 2012 champ is $15. Falling in the average-high price range, it’s not a horrible amount to pay for this burger. Would I mind seeing it knocked down a dollar or two? Not at all. But really it’s not too shabby for a burger that was this tasty.

Overall (6.92/10)

Where this burger may have lacked the ‘wow factor’ when it came to appearance, it more than made up for it with the delicious flavours that it puts in your mouth! Back in 2012, PEI Burger Love only had 22 participating restaurants (as opposed to the 60 restaurants that participated in 2015), and even though there was less competition back then, I’m sure this burger could still hold its own when pitted against the other participants!
