Tempo is one of those places in Halifax that I’ve walked past many times but have never gone in there for a meal, with the exception of last Burger Week. When I visited during BW I wasn’t super impressed with the burger that they were offering, although it was my seventh burger of the day, so I like to give them the benefit of the doubt. I decided it was time to go back and give one of their regular menu burgers a try, and I figured I would go with their appropriately named Tempo Burger.

Stats

From the menu: “Oulton’s beef, aged cheddar, smoked tomato ketchup, candied bacon, fried onions, tempura pickle”

Appearance (6.75/10)

I want to apologize for the quality of the photos I’m using here. While the red lighting they use at Tempo provides a unique atmosphere for visitors, it does not allow for easy photography.

In person, this burger did look pretty decent, despite looking slightly like it was quickly put together. The tempura pickle looked great sitting on top of the grill-marked bun. I was excited about the generous amount of bacon, and overall this burger looked like it had pretty good portioning in terms of the toppings.

Taste (7/10)

I was pretty pleased with the Tempo Burger. The fried onions were delicious, and I really liked the crunchy texture that they provided. Also lending a bit of a crunch was the lightly toasted bun, which I was a big fan of. The huge strip of bacon was awesome, and I was glad that they gave a generous helping of cheddar, which gave the perfect level of cheesiness. Not usually being a fan of deep-fried pickles, I was surprised to find out that I really enjoyed the tempura pickle, which was a great substitution for the usual breaded coating that you would normally get.

The beef was a little overcooked for my liking, which caused it to lose some of the potential juiciness. I also wasn’t completely sold on the smoked tomato ketchup, mostly because of the texture caused by the tomato chunks, but it still gave a nice taste to the burger.

Cost vs. What You Get (8/10)

If you want to get this burger, it will cost you $15. Given that I didn’t have any extreme complaints, and that this falls in the average price-range for burgers, it’s a pretty fair price. It’s also nice that they use Nova Scotia beef, which can cause the price to be raised slightly.

Overall (7.25/10)

I’m glad I gave Tempo another shot after Burger Week. This burger was somewhat simple in concept, but it was a tasty time. It was also really nice to see how accommodating the staff was, and overall it was a nice night out in a very cold downtown Halifax!
