With February in full swing, the best time of the year is almost here! That’s right, Halifax Burger Week is just around the corner, and in true Life of Burgers spirit, I’ve been warming up my stomach for the huge event.
Elle’s Bistro is a cozy brunch and lunch spot, nestled in the middle of Barrington Street, and they just so happen to have a bunch of delicious-sounding burgers on their menu. My first experience here was during last years Burger Week, and at that time they were fairly new to Halifax. I decided it was time to make a return visit, and although it was a tough decision, I ended up going with the Sweet & Smokey Bacon Brat Burger.
Stats
From the menu: “Smokey burger topped with bacon, bratwurst and sharp cheddar”
Appearance (7.5/10)
The appearance of this burger was very reminiscent of a greasy diner burger (which is not a bad thing). I loved the shiny bun top, as well as the bed of homefries that it was placed upon. Between the juicy burger patty, crispy bacon, and dripping cheddar, the elements of this burger instantly made my mouth water, and I could not wait to dig in!
Taste (7.5/10)
This is a pretty simple burger in concept, but I was glad to find out that it had a lot of great aspects to it. The soft yet slightly tough texture of the bun was a perfect fit for this style of burger. The bacon was delicious, and the patty, which managed to maintain a bit of a pink middle, was really juicy and the beef had a really awesome taste to it. When all of this came together, it reminded me of a really nice home-cooked style burger. I was also given the option of choosing a mustard to go on the burger, and I went with the ‘sweet with heat’ option, which had a nice little kick to it that worked well with the meats.
I did enjoy the few slices of bratwurst that came on the burger, but I really would have liked to have had more. I feel like adding more would really turn this burger into a meat-lovers dream!
I also have to give praise for the homefries as they were delicious! You can pretty much get them with anything on the menu, and I very much recommend that you do!
Cost vs. What You Get (8/10)
Elle’s Bistro has a big menu, and the great thing about it (besides all the tasty sounding dishes) is the awesome prices of everything! This burger costs $8.95 (plus $2.50 for homefries), which is a pretty affordable price for this filling meal. If they were to up the amount of brat that they put on this burger, I would even be inclined to pay a bit more for it.
Overall (7.67/10)
This is a great little spot in the heart of downtown Halifax to grab a quick bite or a relaxing cup of coffee. The staff are super friendly, and they seem like they really love their job. In terms of the burger, I was very pleased. It isn’t a complex burger, but it still holds it’s own against other burgers in the city that have loads of components. This simplicity is really refreshing, and it shows that a great burger doesn’t have to be larger than life. I will definitely be going back to try another burger here!
