May hits differently in Nova Scotia. Kids’ activities ramp up. Work deadlines pile on before summer. If you’re a grad parent, prom and convocation season has its own particular chaos. The long weekend feels far away and everything needs to happen at once.
For a lot of people, this is the most stressful stretch of the year – and nobody’s really talking about it because everyone else looks like they’re handling it fine. Spoiler: most of them are not. A 2025 survey found that 83% of employees report feeling workplace stress regularly. What varies is how much of it people are quietly absorbing versus actually dealing with. Free counselling is available right now for Nova Scotians 18 and older, without a referral.
The thing about accumulated stress is that it doesn’t wait for a convenient time to surface. It tends to show up as irritability with the people you care about, trouble sleeping even when you’re exhausted, or a general flatness that makes it hard to enjoy the things that usually help. If you’re nodding, you’re not alone – and you don’t have to wait for it to get worse.

Somewhere in the middle — and that’s okay.
A few things that actually move the needle during high-pressure stretches: writing your to-do list out of your head and onto paper (research in the Journal of Experimental Psychology shows this frees up working memory and reduces rumination), getting outside for even 20 minutes, and being honest with at least one person in your life about how full your plate actually is.
That last one is harder than it sounds. But most people, when they finally say it out loud, find out the people around them feel exactly the same way. If the pressure has been building for a while, Access Wellness offers free, confidential counselling for Nova Scotia residents 18 and older - and you can connect by phone, video, or in person without a referral. There's free short term counselling available here.
Access Wellness is funded by Nova Scotia Health and provided by TELUS Health.
