But Mommm: The Coffee

Who would have thought that I could explain my life with a single cup of coffee? Definitely not me until about ten minutes ago when I opened our microwave and saw my Tim Horton’s cup sitting in there.

This particular cup and I have had quite a relationship today. I picked up my medium on the way home from the grocery store around 10:30 this morning and promptly drank a few sips of the piping hot brew as we finished the drive. I put it down on the counter so that I could bring in the groceries and put them away. Of course everything I pulled out of the bags made the kids hungry so the next 30 minutes were spent handing out apples, cheese nips and yogurt while filling the cupboards. When I finished I noticed my coffee sitting on the counter. I put it in the microwave for a few seconds and enjoyed a couple of sips.

But Mommm: The Coffee

Just then I heard crying coming from the living room. World War III was breaking out because all three kids felt that they should be the only one allowed to hide behind a particular cushion on the couch. I set my coffee down on the counter and went in to create a diversion. The girls and I decided to bake some cupcakes for my Dad’s birthday dinner tonight and started gathering all of the ingredients to get started. As our six year old taught our three year old to crack eggs, I once again noticed my coffee and put it back in the microwave for another 25 seconds. I enjoyed a few more sips as the kids poured the batter into the cupcakes cups.

Once the cupcakes were in the oven it was time to make (and serve) lunch. Once everyone was fed and back playing, I once again noticed my coffee as I started tidying the kitchen. As my husband took our youngest upstairs to put him down for a nap, I zapped my luke warm coffee and enjoyed a few sips as I emptied the dishwasher and cleaned up from lunch. The girls came bounding in to ice and decorate the cupcakes so we spend the next half hour making pink icing and decorating.

When we were done our oldest went off to a playdate. With my husband out running errands and our son sleeping, I turned on a show for our middle daughter and once again, gave my coffee a quick hit in the microwave. And this time, it was there it stayed.

But Mommm: The Coffee

I started cleaning and getting things ready for supper. My daughter and I read a few books and then our son woke up. We spent some time playing with trains and then my brother and his family, my 93 year old great aunt and my Dad arrived for dinner.

By most parenting standards, today was a pretty normal day. In fact, if someone were to ask me about today I’d probably define it as one of those great lazy days at home – no sports, no activities, no kids’ birthday parties. Yet somehow, in the daily hustle of taking care of kids and the house, there wasn’t even a chance to sit and enjoy one full cup of hot coffee.  To quote an anonymous parent, “There comes a time in a mother’s life where she needs to sacrifice certain things in her own life to fulfill that of her child’s.” Truer words have never been said (and I’d imagine the author meant more than a coffee…).
