CAE, a leader in civil aviation and defence modelling, simulation and training, is expanding its defence and security team in Halifax.

Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI) has signed a five-year incentive agreement with CAE to encourage the company to invest and create jobs in Nova Scotia. CAE must create at least five full-time equivalent positions in the first year. Then the company can earn a rebate on payroll for up to 100 new positions.

If CAE creates that many jobs, the company would add more than $20 million in salary to Nova Scotia’s economy, and employees would pay provincial personal income taxes of about $2.29 million. The company can earn up to $1.428 million in payroll rebates through NSBI’s Strategic Investment Funds.

CAE employs more than 8,000 people at more than 100 locations in 30 countries, including about 100 people in Halifax. Dedicated to innovation, CAE is consistently ranked as one of the top 20 Canadian companies in research and development investments.

Nova Scotia’s aerospace industry generates $600 million in revenues annually and, when combined with defence spending, the industry contributes about $1.5 billion to the province’s economy each year.

“The defence, security and aerospace sector is a key part of our economy and a strategic focus for the province and NSBI,” said Ron Smith, interim CEO, Nova Scotia Business Inc. “We want to encourage CAE to secure more contracts from export markets and to have those contracts serviced by Nova Scotians.”
