Camp Rankin Provides Unique 4-H Experience

Camp Rankin, the provincial 4-H camp, is ready to welcome 200 4-H members and their friends from July 5 to Aug. 7 for an outstanding experience involving healthy living, leadership and skills training.

For the past 43 summers, the camp, in partnership with the Nova Scotia 4-H Council and the Department of Agriculture, has offered campers a positive, educational experience based on the
4-H motto of “learn to do by doing.

“Camp Rankin is just one piece of the outstanding leadership development program that 4-H offers youth in Nova Scotia,” said Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell. “This camp has proven to be so memorable for thousands of 4-H alumni that many are now enrolling their children in this great summer program.”

Young people from ages nine to 15 attend a week-long camp in Cape George, near St. Peter’s, Richmond Co. 4-H members are encouraged to bring a friend to camp to promote the program as a great experience and to build the program with new members.

“The volunteers and board of directors are excited for another wonderful summer at Camp Rankin,” said Doug Landry, chairman of Camp Rankin 4-H Association.

Camp Rankin was built by volunteers in 1972 by the Richmond County 4-H Leader’s Council and was the first 4-H camp to be built in the Atlantic provinces. Its facilities include 60 acres of hiking trails, a beach, and a dining and recreation hall in a scenic setting on the Bras d’Or Lakes. Trained camp counsellors lead the youth through all traditional camp activities and 4-H skills sessions. Richmond County 4-H Leaders Council maintains the camp.
