The Canso Canal will be closed for an extended period starting Nov. 1 to May 14, to marine traffic as work continues on the Canso Causeway swing bridge.
The swing bridge is 60-years-old and requires significant upgrades to ensure it continues to provide service to all transportation types including vehicular, marine and rail.
Improvements to the Canso Causeway include upgrades to the swing bridge, a new operators’ building as well as structural, mechanical and electrical repairs.
There will be a temporary detour bridge and temporary road approaches to help reduce vehicular traffic delays.
The Canso Causeway project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2017.
The Canso Canal is owned by the Government of Canada and operated on its behalf by the Canadian Coast Guard.
