Captain William Spry library wins national award

The Captain William Spry public library has won a national award in the TD Summer Reading Club. The library also launched this year’s program today with a party at the library. I also did a TV story on the CBC evening news, if you are interested in seeing the pictures check them out here.
According to the TD website, the library staff visited 10 local schools and used “drama, dance, humour and interactive elements” to get kids interested in reading during the summer of 2011. “They also promoted the program at a community health fair and strove to engage marginalized youth in positive book-based activities. The library extended the program to day camps by delivering reading bins and story time at camp locations and inviting camps to attend weekly programs at the library. Their Splish-Splash art camp involved many children and connected hands-on activities directly to reading through related displays of high interest library resources. In 2011, Captain William Spry Library had its highest participation ever. Participating children read 4357 books – 85% more books than in 2010.”
