Car crash leads police to arson suspect

Annapolis District RCMP has arrested a man after responding to an arson on Hwy. 1 in Wilmot.

At approximately 10:40 p.m. on December 6, police responded to a report of a vehicle on fire on Hwy. 1 in Wilmot. Police were advised that the vehicle fire had been set deliberately and that the person who had set the vehicle on fire had fled in a green Ford Focus.

While responding to the scene, police came across a green Ford Focus in a ditch near the intersection of Victoria Rd. and Hwy. 1 in Wilmot. EHS was already on scene assisting the male driver of the Ford Focus. Police identified the man as the suspect who had set the original vehicle on fire. The man was arrested without incident.

After receiving medical attention from EHS, police transported the man to the Middleton RCMP Detachment. Police began to detect an odour of liquor on him and he was subsequently given a demand to provide a sample of breath. The man refused to provide a sample.

The 34-year-old Annapolis County man was released on conditions and will appear in Annapolis Royal Provincial Court at a later date. The man will be facing charges of Arson and Refusal to Comply with a Demand.

The investigation is continuing.
