Hazard identified: In all reported cases, the motor failure in fan motors caused the fan blade to burn within the unit. Since these units can be near a residence or other building, the flame could potentially spread and cause property damage or serious injury. As of August 28, 2019, the company has received 5 reports in Canada, and no reports of injury. In the United States, the company has received 1 report, and no reports of injury. In all incidents reported to date, the burning has been contained to the units. In two cases, flames were observed.

Consumers should contact their installing servicer, dealer or contractor for a free repair to the affected Carrier- and Bryant-branded ductless heat pump outdoor units. While awaiting repair, consumers should monitor affected units while they are being operated and keep a minimum clearance of 24 inches (61 cm) between affected units and all other objects, especially foliage and other flammable items.

For more information, consumers with affected products may contact their installing servicer, dealer or contractor for assistance using the dealer locator on the Carrier and Bryant  websites based on the appropriate brand.  Consumers may also telephone toll-free 1-844-468-4301 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday, for assistance in locating a Carrier or Bryant dealer in their area. Consumers may view the release by the US CPSC on the Commission’s website.
