Cascades becomes first bullfrogpowered spa in the Maritimes

Cascades Day Spa is bullfrogpowered with clean, renewable electricity

Bullfrog Power, Canada’s 100 per cent green electricity provider, today announced that Cascades Day Spa is bullfrogpowered with clean, renewable electricity, making it the first spa in the Maritimes to sign on for green power with Bullfrog.

Understanding that conventional electricity generation is a leading industrial source of carbon dioxide—the primary greenhouse gas linked to climate change—as well as other emissions that contribute to poor air quality, the spa supports renewable electricity as a meaningful way to do its part for the environment, and take action on climate change and air pollution.

Through the decision, Cascades will reduce its environmental impact, demonstrate support for new renewable generation in Canada and join the thousands of bullfrogpowered organizations across Canada taking action toward a cleaner energy future.

“We have a responsibility to future generations and understand that our role is to help create a cleaner, healthier world for them,” says Kim Hayward, Spa Director, Cascades Day Spa. “Signing on for green electricity with Bullfrog Power is a natural and easy next step for us—one that complements our existing environmental program and helps us achieve our sustainability goal.”

Bullfrog’s Maritimes generators will inject renewable electricity onto the regional grid to match the amount of power Cascades Day Spa uses.

Across Canada, Bullfrog’s electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogo program instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear.

In the Maritime provinces, Bullfrog sources from wind farms and low-impact hydro facilities in Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

Bullfrog’s goal is to advance the development of wind power throughout the Maritimes.

“We congratulate Cascades for becoming the first spa in the Maritimes to sign on for green electricity with Bullfrog Power,” said Holly Bond, Director, Eastern Region, Bullfrog Power.

“By supporting clean, renewable electricity for its facility, Cascades truly enhances the spa experience for all of its clients and sets the example for other Maritime businesses to follow.”

Driven by a philosophy that there are always greener ways of doing things, Cascades encourages employees to contribute ideas on how to reduce the spa’s environmental impact.

A number of sustainable initiatives have been implemented throughout the facility as a result. The organization has installed both an energy-efficient HVAC system and hot tub, and replaced regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs where possible.

To reduce waste, Cascades uses washable stainless containers instead of plastic cups for product dispensing, and provides fabric face cloths instead of paper hand towels to customers.

No longer supplying clients with free disposable pedicure slippers, Cascades encourages patrons to bring their own flip flops.

The organization also uses low-VOC paint and environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Bullfrog Power launched in the Maritimes in the fall of 2009 and provides all homes and businesses in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island a 100 per cent clean, renewable electricity choice.

No special wiring or equipment is required to become bullfrogpowered.
