Celebrate Canada 150 and New Year’s Eve at the Emera Oval and Grand Parade

Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Mayor Mike Savage, Halifax Member of Parliament Andy Fillmore, and members of Regional Council are inviting residents to join in New Year’s Eve celebrations being held this year at the Emera Oval and Grand Parade Square. On Dec. 31, lace up for a fun, free, family-friendly event at the Emera Oval. Public skates will be hosted from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. to midnight. Free hot chocolate will be served, and fireworks will occur at 7 p.m. and midnight. The municipality is also pleased to partner with Eastlink TV on the main event, New Year's Eve 2017, being hosted in Grand Parade. This year’s event features an exciting entertainment line-up, including live performances from Juno-nominated artists The Strumbellas and Ria Mae, along with Reeny Smith and more. This year’s celebration will also commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday with free flags, pins and a special Canada 150 gift for the first 2,000 people on site. Pre-show events and giveaways begin on site at 10 p.m., with the live broadcast on Eastlink TV (channel 10, HD 610) beginning at 10:30 p.m. (AST). Don’t miss the opportunity to ring in the new year with family and friends at this free event, with the biggest fireworks display in Atlantic Canada. Please note that between 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Argyle Street will be closed from Duke Street to Prince Street and Carmichael Street will be closed from Grafton Street to Argyle Street. The municipality is offering free and extended service on buses and the Alderney Ferry, beginning at 6 p.m. onward in support of M.A.D.D. Halifax Region.
