Charges after $10,000 in tires stolen

Halifax District RCMP has charged a man in relation to a theft of tires in Upper Tantallon.

On March 8, 2022, Halifax District RCMP began an investigation into a theft of tires that had taken place at a storage container located beside a hardware store at 5130 St. Margarets Bay Rd. in Upper Tantallon. Police learned that one of the vehicles used in the theft was a rental truck.

On March 17, after receiving information from the public, police executed a search warrant at a storage facility on Horseshoe Lake Dr. in Bayers Lake. During the search, police seized 46 tires valued at more than $10,000. Police have since confirmed that the seized tires were the ones stolen from the hardware store on March 8. Police also conducted a search of the rental truck believed to have been used in the theft and seized a prohibited shot gun that was found in the vehicle.

RCMP officers later located and arrested Justin Omond, 32, of Ingramport and he has been charged with:

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime;
• Careless Use of Firearm;
• Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose;
• Carrying a Concealed Weapon;
• Unauthorized Possession of Firearm;
• Possession of Firearm Knowing Possession is Unauthorized;
• Occupant of a Motor Vehicle in Which there is a Firearm, Prohibited Weapon or Restricted Weapon;
• Possess Firearm while Prohibited;
• Break and Enter to Commit; and
• Theft Over $5,000;

Omond was remanded into custody overnight and appeared in Halifax Provincial Court on March 18. Omond was released on conditions by the court and will return to Halifax Provincial Court on May 13, 2022, at 9:30 a.m.

Police continue to gather information and evidence, and the investigation is ongoing.
