Charges after DUI, headbutting cops

Halifax District RCMP charged a 25-year-old Weymouth man for assaulting police officers and impaired driving offences.

On April 17, at approximately 11:15 p.m., a member of the Halifax District RCMP Traffic Unit was on patrol in the area of Windmill Rd. in Dartmouth. The member was waived over by an employee of a business to check on a vehicle parked nearby, due to suspicious activity.

The member approached the vehicle and the driver came out of the vehicle showing signs of impairment. The member tried to speak to the driver, and the driver attempted to punch the member. The driver was taken to the ground, handcuffed and continued to assault the member by kicking him. During this time, the three other occupants of the vehicle fled the area, but were located a short time later and taken to a safe location.

The driver was taken to Cole Harbour Detachment for breath samples. At the detachment, the driver assaulted two other officers by kicking and headbutting them. The driver refused to provide breath samples.

On the way to booking, the man continuously bashed his head on the safety shield, causing injury. EHS attended and the male was taken to hospital.
