The Cumberland County Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit has charged two people who were located driving a stolen vehicle and attempted to flee from police.
On November 30 at approximately 10 a.m., Cumberland County District RCMP responded to a report of a stolen minivan from the Pugwash area. Two suspects were identified as being involved in the theft and police began attempts to locate them and the stolen minivan.
Shortly after 10 p.m., police located the stolen minivan travelling on Hwy. 2 near Sackville, New Brunswick. As the minivan entered Nova Scotia, police attempted to stop it. The minivan accelerated in an attempt to flee and police deployed a spike belt on Hwy. 104 which was successful in deflating the minivan’s tires.
The suspects continued their attempts to flee from police, even after the tires went flat. The minivan then rammed a police car, which resulted in the minivan being immobilized. The driver, a man, then attempted to flee the area on foot but was arrested a short distance away without further incident. The passenger of the minivan, a woman, was also arrested. Police seized several stolen items from the minivan, along with methamphetamine. No one was injured.
Normand Gautreau, 27, of Memramcook (New Brunswick), has been charged with Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Flight from Police, Resist Arrest, Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, Theft of Motor Vehicle and Possession of Stolen Property. Gautreau has been remanded into custody and will appear in Amherst Provincial Court on December 6, 2021, at 9:30 a.m. for a bail hearing.
The woman was later released on conditions and will be facing similar charges. She will appear in court at a later date.
