Allen Murray has been appointed chief Crown attorney of the central region of Nova Scotia, effective Monday, Dec. 23.

“I am delighted to have Mr. Murray take the helm in our central region,” said Martin Herschorn, director of Public Prosecutions.

“He is a distinguished Crown attorney whose experience and ability make him ideally suited for this key management role.”

Mr. Murray will lead a dozen Crown attorneys and nine support staff in Truro, New Glasgow, Antigonish and Amherst.

A native of New Glasgow, Mr. Murray holds an honours bachelor of arts and a bachelor of education both from St. Francis Xavier University. He graduated from Dalhousie University law school in 1990 and articled with Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales in Halifax.

Mr. Murray is a veteran of criminal law as a Crown attorney and a defence lawyer. He spent four years as a staff lawyer with Nova Scotia Legal Aid in Antigonish and has been a Crown attorney in the Public Prosecution Service Antigonish office for the past 12 years.

Mr. Murray is a member of the Public Prosecution Service Education Committee, president of the Antigonish and Guysborough County Bar Association since 2009, and board vice-chairman since 2008 of Celtic Community Homes, a non-profit organization providing support for mental health consumers.

He is also a former member of the board of directors for the Naomi Society for Victims of Family Violence and volunteers for several children’s sports activities in the community.

Mr. Murray replaces David Fairbanks who will be retiring.
