cloth diapering and disposables (for in-betweenie mamas)

The proud smiles coming from this tiny little guy as he walks with his heavy little toddler feet from the potty makes my heart warm every single time. “Mama? Go pee? Me do.”

And yep, little brother has a handle on the whole thing. He knows exactly where to put the stool, lifts both seats up, pees (mostly) towards the hole and manages to press the right button for the #1 flush.

Cloth diapering has definitely been part of the reason for my boys potty training early (always before age 2). It’s not exactly a nice feeling to sit in a wet cloth diaper or go poo in one, and they figured that out in a hurry. I also have no problem letting my kids run around with no clothes in order to be more aware of their bodies. There have been lots of puddles to clean up and *ahem* other things, but it’s worked!

But like you, as a cloth diapering mama, I’ve had my own diapering issues. Sometimes I let them sit in the dirty laundry waaaaay too long even though I knew I was risking having a perma-stinky cloth diaper. Or I just couldn’t muster up the energy to throw in another load because I knew they had to be stripped. Or I just didn’t feel like cloth diapering AT ALL and have taken 3 month long hiatus’ because I felt like I already couldn’t get a handle on my everyday laundry.

And sometimes? Sometimes I’ve even thrown out a perfectly good cloth diaper straight in the garbage because peeling it away from a tiny poop covered body/onesie/snowsuit was already enough to send me over the edge.

It’s horrible, I know!! Tell me I’m not the only one.

That’s all part of the “extra work” that comes with cloth diapering but for the most part it’s relatively easy. And, most of us have a disposable stash too. We need them for traveling, in between wash days, or sometimes we need them just to get through the day a little easier. But we usually don’t talk about that because *gasp!* not disposables!?!?

Huggies has been our go-to brand when not cloth diapering since the boys were born. Since we lived in the North, I would stock up for in between days and nighttime use with a costco sized box everytime we took the 3 hour trip to the nearest city!

My little guys are beyond all day cloth diapers now so undies and once in a while disposable slip on diapers are what we do while we transition into big boy undies full time. The Little Movers Slip On diapers have been a great option for Ethan. When we’re planning on being out the majority of the day, especially with a lot of driving, they’re perfect for when we can’t pull over to stop at a bathroom. They’re super easy to get a busy toddler to step into and step out of without any fighting, back arching or writhing 🙂 We’re obviously not reaching for these constantly during the day because Ethan is learning to go potty, but when we do it’s nice to see him able to slip them up and down by himself and I’m happy to have a clean car seat and a little guy who’s not embarrassed if he couldn’t hold it through the night.

You’re doing great, baby.
