Come Meet Your Farmer At the Mall

Shoppers will get a taste of rural life when they visit Mic Mac Mall in Dartmouth for the second annual Meet Your Farmer at the Mall event.

The event, taking place Friday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., will feature information booths hosted by local farmers and members of Nova Scotia’s agricultural sector, a farm animal and equipment display, children’s activities, and cooking demonstrations with local foods and a local chef.

“Meet Your Farmer at the Mall is a great way for people to meet local farmers and food producers face-to-face and to learn more about our agricultural sector,” said Agriculture Minister John MacDonell. “This event builds on the success and momentum of Select Nova Scotia, the province’s buy local marketing initiative.”

“Meet Your Farmer puts a face on an industry that goes beyond the grocery store,” said federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. “By bringing agriculture downtown for a day, Nova Scotia families have a chance to learn about the science and the partnerships that go into helping the agricultural sector produce healthier, safer, high-quality food for all Canadians.”

The event, supported by the federal and provincial governments, the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, and affiliated commodity groups, aims to raise awareness about local agriculture and the benefits of buying local food.

With about 17,000 people visiting Mic Mac Mall every day, the event is a good opportunity for farmers and consumers to meet and talk about local food and the agriculture industry.

“We are looking forward to this event,” said Dennis Boudreau, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture. “Having a chance to meet with consumers in such a unique setting is a real opportunity for us to share our story of the importance of agriculture.”

Meet Your Farmer at the Mall ties into Open Farm Day on Sept. 15, when farms across the province will welcome visitors for activities and demonstrations.
