Nova Scotia’s creative communities are gathering in Sydney to collaborate on how culture can grow the economy.
The Growing the Creative Economy conference is being hosted by the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design from today, April 14 to Wednesday, April 16.
“We are blessed with many talented citizens in our culture sector, which has a huge impact on Nova Scotia’s economy,” said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince. “Government, business and community leaders have an unprecedented opportunity to work together to leverage the rich diversity and culture of the province to benefit all Nova Scotians.”
Tens of thousands of people work in Nova Scotia’s creative sectors, creating $1.2 billion in economic activity.
The province contributed $48,000 to the conference.
The theme of this year’s conference is creativity, collaboration and change. Speakers include: Mark Barone, the founder of ArtsmArtcities; Jonathon Wayne, Etsy ambassador and designer from Vancouver; Gavin Sheppard, creator, writer and 2010 TED Fellow; and Home and Garden Television host, and award-winning designer, Sarah Richardson.
