Community comes together to remember fallen firefighter

Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency held a special memorial ceremony tonight at the Lake Echo Fire Station (Station 21).

“At around 3 p.m. on Nov. 2, 1997, fire crews from Lake Echo, Lawrencetown, and Chezzetcook responded to a single vehicle accident in the area of West Porters Lake Road.

The heavy rain and thick fog made finding the crash scene difficult.
Forty-two-year-old volunteer firefighter Ronald MacDonald was one of those searching for the accident site.

At one point MacDonald turned around to head back in the opposite direction when he collided with an ambulance, also en route to the accident.

Despite the best efforts of MacDonald’s fellow firefighters, he died at the scene.”
Station 21 members were joined by members of the public, politicians, fellow firefighters past and present, and police in celebrating MacDonald’s life on the 20th anniversary of his passing.

As wreaths were laid at the large memorial outside of the station, the crowd sat silently. A small gathering was held after the ceremony for all to attend.
