Community Health board giving out funding for small projects, and seeks new members

Hey everyone,

I’m posting two notices on behalf of the Chebucto West Community Health Board. The board is A) Looking to GIVE YOU MONEY through a program of small grants called the Community Development Fund, and B) Looking FOR YOUR HELP if you want to sit on the board.

Full disclosure: I sit on the Chebucto West Community Health board, which is a great organization designed to listen to the community’s health needs and take those concerns back to Capital Health. The issues that come up are things like: do we have the right kind of free exercise programs in our area? How about breakfast programs in our schools? Do we have the right kind of supports so people can quit smoking? Can teens get condoms in their school’s sexual health centre?

The health board is funded through Capital Health, and is composed of 15 regular people from our area. I’m one of those people. I don’t receive payment for sitting on this board, but I do lend my skills to their work. So I’m posting this partially because I sit on the board, but I also think this info could be important to people in our neighbourhood (particularly the grants!).

Have you ever had a great idea to make your neighbourhood healthier? If so, we’d like to hear from you! Chebucto West Community Health Board is accepting applications to our Community Development Fund from qualified non-profit and community based organizations. Grants of up to $5,000 are available. We have a legislated mandate to be the eyes, ears and voice for our community’s health. The Board fosters community development, engages citizens and stakeholders to identify health priorities and make recommendations for improvements in health care services. To find out more about funding criteria, or to discuss your idea, contact Andrea Cochrane, Coordinator, at 487-0591. Deadline for applications is Friday, April 29, 2011.

The Chebucto West Community Health Board is seeking new volunteer board members interested in creating a healthier community. The Board partners with many large and small health and community organizations to improve the community’s health. We serve residents of Armdale- Purcell’s Cove, Herring Cove- Spryfield- Sambro, Clayton Park and Rockingham, BLT and Hubley, Prospect, St. Margaret’s Bay and Hubbards- a huge and very diverse area! We want our Board to reflect our community, so diversity, gender balance and the age of our members is important to us. We encourage any interested resident of our CHB area to apply. If you have a desire to make your neighbourhoods healthier, we’d like to hear from you! Contact Andrea Cochrane, coordinator, at 487-0591. Deadline for applying is Friday, April 29, 2011.
