Government is making it easier for town halls, community buildings, fire halls and other public buildings to save money and reduce emissions by installing solar panels.
In early 2017, government will launch the Solar for Community Buildings Pilot Program. Participants will be able to generate solar electricity to reduce their energy costs and sell electricity back to Nova Scotia Power.
“This will help municipalities, First Nations, academic institutions and non-profit groups participate in Nova Scotia’s transition to a cleaner energy future,” said Energy Minister Michel Samson. “We’re already a leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and community participation in renewable energy generation will enhance our position in a cost-effective way.”
Draft regulations for the program are now available for public comment. The program is expected to launch in the coming months.
Government committed to introduce the new program in the province’s 2015 Electricity Plan, and developed the draft regulations through consultation with eligible partners.
The regulations can be viewed at http://energy.novascotia.ca/renewables/solar-energy.
Comments can be emailed to solarcommunitybuildings@novascotia.ca. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 11, 2017.
