Community to Celebrate New Bridge to Surettes Island

About 1,000 people are expected to gather Saturday, June 28, to celebrate the official opening of the new bridge joining the villages of Surettes Island and Sluice Point in the Municipality of Argyle.

The new $13.5-million, two-lane bridge means more convenient and reliable travel for island residents and visitors because it replaces an aging one-lane bridge.

“The community, the contractor, and the department have all worked together to deliver the bridge on time and on budget,” said Geoff MacLellan, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. “The excitement around Saturday’s celebration shows how important the bridge is to the region.”

The bridge will close at 1:30 p.m. to allow setup for the celebration that begins at 2 p.m. After speeches and a ribbon cutting there will be a parade across the bridge to Surettes Island where the celebrations are expected to continue until 6 p.m.

“The community is very proud and grateful for the new bridge,” said Bridge Celebrations 2014 Committee president Corey Clamp, “There hasn’t been this much traffic on Surettes Island in decades, and everybody is smiling.”
