Release:
The province continues to move forward with the largest health-care infrastructure project in Nova Scotia’s history.
A tender to design and build a parkade across from the Halifax Infirmary on Summer Street was awarded to Lindsay Construction Limited, today, July 2, as part of the QEII New Generation project’s parking strategy. The parkade, with about 500 spaces, will be located north of the Museum of Natural History on provincially owned land.
The existing parkade on Robie Street will be taken down to allow for the construction of an expanded inpatient centre and operating rooms. The replacement parkade is necessary before construction starts on the hospital site to provide parking for patients, visitors and staff as spaces will be lost during construction when the existing parkade comes down.
A second larger parkade of about 1,000 spaces will be built at the former CBC Building site, part of the Halifax Infirmary’s design-build-finance and maintain project.
Quick Facts:
— the expansion of the Halifax Infirmary (HI) is the heart of the QEII New Generation project
— a parking study conducted for the province indicated 92 per cent of hospital
— visitors either drive or are driven to the hospital and park on site; about 2,700 parking spaces are needed at the HI site
— more than 14,000 people visit the QEII Health Sciences Centre every day
— the province worked closely with HRM on the HI parking strategy, which received unanimous HRM council support this spring
— the Summer Street parkade will have about 500 parking spaces including the required barrier-free and vehicle-charging stations
— a pedway connecting the parkade with the hospital will improve accessibility
— the cost of the parkade, pedway and burying the power lines on Summer Street is about $29 million
— construction of the parkade is scheduled to start next month
— public open space is planned along Bell Road and Summer Street
–the Lindsay design team consists of Walter Fedy Architects, Fathom Studios, SDMM, Smith and Andersen, and BMR Engineering
