Release:
To say Halifax traffic has gotten really bad might be a slight understatement. Recent traffic congestion reports from geolocation company TomTom places Halifax as the third-worst in Canada, only behind Vancouver and Toronto. The average Halifax driver spends 111 hours sitting in rush hour every year, which is nearly 5 days.
But a new loft apartment building in Downtown Halifax is aiming to be a part of the solution, and help people transition to a downtown lifestyle in a very unique way. Agency Art Lofts has just launched a program called “Rent for Rides” where the loft apartment building is allowing anyone to trade their car for 2x its value in rent. So a car worth $5,000 could get you $10,000 in rent.
And this converted 1960’s office building doesn’t house your standard “base model” apartments. These creative lofts come with 12-foot ceilings, access to a Private Sauna, 4 Private Workout Rooms, Private Offices, a Podcast Studio, a Private Speakeasy, and the list of amenities goes on.

The timing couldn’t be better. In addition to Halifax’s traffic congestion problem, the city has also recently decided to make motorists pay for on-street parking on Saturdays, specifically in Downtown Halifax (effective July 18th). Just one more reason for anyone who has been considering a car-free lifestyle to make take the leap and embrace the many and growing options the city has to offer for alternative transportation options. This includes things like the significant bike infrastructure expansion, the adoption of Bird e-scooters and bikes, the continued growth of Communauto’s carshare fleet, and additional dedicated bus lanes throughout the city.
So for those who are ready to trade traffic for downtown living and start living rent-free for up to 12 months, the full details for this promotion can be found on the website (RentForRides.ca). Some conditions apply, and all cars are subject to an official inspection and appraisal from a professional mechanic or car dealership.
