Conservatives to correct blunder on home retrofit program

Halifax West Liberal MP Geoff Regan said Tuesday he is pleased with reports that today’s federal budget will correct an unfortunate blunder made by the Conservative government last year when they cancelled the popular ECOEnergy home retrofit program.

“I am pleased the government is going to respond positively to my calls for the restoration of a program which has helped a lot of homeowners,” Mr. Regan said. “I have worked closely on this file with organizations like Sustainable Housing Nova Scotia to have this program restored and it is nice to see that their voice has been heard.”

Mr. Regan said he hopes budget leaks about the home retrofit program are true and that the government will ensure there is long-term stable funding for the program.

“It should never have been cancelled in the first place,” Mr. Regan noted. “And I hope the renewed program will be fair to people who qualified for grants last year or who would have qualified if the Harper Conservatives hadn’t suddenly killed it without notice.”

The home retrofit program provides grants for energy audits and home improvements that reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

“This program helps homeowners save money and makes it more affordable for seniors to stay in their homes longer, while at the same time creating jobs and making a big impact for our environment,” said Mr. Regan.
