Construction Beginning on New Halifax Common Pedestrian Plazas

Monday, Aug. 24, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – With the Cogswell roundabout now open at the intersection of North Park, Ahern, Trollope and Cogswell streets, construction is set to begin on the adjacent new pedestrian plazas on the Halifax North Common.

Work will begin this Thursday, Aug. 27, and is expected to continue for several weeks. This stage of construction will require the closure of the greenway trail on the Common until further notice.

Pedestrians will be able to use the sidewalk on the east side of North Park Street during the closure. Pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the area are advised to watch for additional closure and detour signage, which can change regularly depending on the work underway.

The three pedestrian plazas, located at various locations along North Park Street, are part of the North Park Intersection Redesign project. Each one will feature a design in concrete, created by artists in collaboration with one of three communities in the neighbourhood: the LGBTQ community, the African Nova Scotian community and the Aboriginal community.

The Aboriginal project will be part of the Creighton Fields Gateway, the pedestrian plaza located at the juncture with Cornwallis Street; the African Nova Scotian project will be incorporated into the Armoury Gateway near the Halifax Armoury; and the LGBTQ project will be located at the Citadel Gateway, which will be built closest to the new roundabout.

A public call for artists and arts facilitators went out earlier this summer. Raven Davis was selected to work on the Citadel Gateway; Marven Nelligan will work on the Armoury Gateway; and Teresa Marshall was chosen for the Creighton Fields Gateway.
