Friday, July 11, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that construction on the first of two roundabouts on North Park Street will begin at 9 a.m.

on Monday, July 14, and will continue until early October.

The first phase of this project will require the entire length of North Park Street, from Cunard to Cogswell, to be closed to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic for a period of five weeks starting sometime in the next week.

Residents will be notified through a Public Service Announcement, social media and electronic signage in the area, at least one day before the closure begins. Motorists should expect traffic delays during the first few days of construction, and are urged to plan ahead now to find alternative routes while this work is going on.

Once the road is closed, crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, for the duration of this project.

There will be further closures on sections of North Park Street and the surrounding streets once this first phase of construction is complete. Details of those closures will be shared with the public as the project progresses.

Throughout the closures, crews on site will be able to accommodate access to North Park Street from Cogswell Street for local residents, businesses and the Halifax Armoury.

For pedestrians, there will be no access to the sidewalk on the west side of North Park while the street is closed. Signage and barriers will be placed on the sidewalks at the intersections at both ends of North Park Street.

Temporary traffic signals will be in place at the intersection of Cunard and Agricola and the crosswalks will be maintained throughout the closure. Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use the active transportation path on the Halifax Common that runs along the length of North Park Street.

This is a two-year project, beginning with construction of the roundabout at Cunard Street, which will be operational by Oct. 31, 2014. The second roundabout at the intersection of North Park, Cogswell, Rainnie, Trollope and Ahern streets will be built in 2015.
