Coun. Steve Craig elected deputy mayor

Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – District 15 Coun. Steve Craig was elected today by his fellow councillors to serve as deputy mayor for Halifax Regional Municipality.

The new deputy mayor takes over from Deputy Mayor Matt Whitman who held the position for the past 12 months.

“The makeup of this new Regional Council is very exciting, and I’m confident that as a team we will continue to build on the foundational work of the previous council to help make the region the best it can be,” Craig said.

“Our collective willingness to roll up our sleeves and work well together has a direct relationship on the municipality’s success. As an experienced and respectful team player, I believe serving as deputy mayor in this first year will help us achieve much over the coming four years.”

Deputy Mayor Craig has been a member of Regional Council since October 2012. In that time he has been an active and engaged councillor in many municipality initiatives, such as pedestrian safety, accessibility, solid waste management, governance, Halifax Regional Water Commission governance changes, fire services strategies, and efforts to change the remuneration model for elected officials.

Craig serves on many municipal committees, boards, and commissions, and continues to look for opportunities to make positive contributions as an elected official.

A long-time resident of Lower Sackville, Deputy Mayor Craig had a 30-year multi-discipline professional career in the telecommunications industry starting with Maritime Telegraph & Telephone Company Ltd. In 1975.

His extensive leadership volunteer involvement spanned decades and includes being a provincial and national Canadian Cancer Society board member, chair of the Cobequid Community Health Centre Foundation, and president of the Lake District Recreation Association. Craig was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of service to peers, community, and Canada, as well as the Halifax Regional Municipality Millennium Medallion for outstanding community contribution. And in 2001 he was named Sackville Volunteer of the Year.

Steve and his wife Shari have two adult children, Marlo and Jonathan, daughter-in-law Melissa Sansom, and grandson Stephen.
