Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The weather is rapidly changing between snow and rain in many areas of the Halifax region right now and crews are dealing with the resulting flooding on municipal streets in low-lying areas.

 

So far about 20 millimetres of rain has fallen in a very short period and the worst reports of flooding are at the following locations:

 

·         Bedford Highway

·         Barrington Street, including severe flooding at the intersection with Inglis Street

·         Quinpool Road near Horseshoe Island & the Armdale Rotary

·         Oxford Street at intersections of Jubilee Road & Coburg Road

·         Thornhill Drive and surrounding subdivision in Spryfield

·         Northwest Arm Drive

·         Cole Harbour Road between Forest Hills Parkway and Caldwell Road

 

Motorists are asked to avoid these areas, if they have to be out on the roads. However, the municipality is strongly advising that residents stay home if they can to help facilitate clearing efforts, including clearing catch basins in known flooding areas.

 

Currently all available municipal and contracted equipment is mobilized to clear the streets and address flooding. Halifax Water crews are also assisting with this work.

 

There are approximately 29,000 catch basins across the Halifax region. If residents are able to do so safely, crews would appreciate the help in clearing the drains that are clogged with snow and ice.
