Crime of the week – RCMP investigates arson, Joggins, N.S.

Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s help in solving a series of suspicious fires that destroyed five structures in total.

On Tuesday, May 5th, at approximately 11:30 p.m.

, Cumberland District RCMP along with Fire Departments from Joggins, River Hebert, Amherst, Springhill, Parrsboro, Advocate, Port Greville, Oxford, Southampton, Leicester, Shinimicas, Truemanville and Fox River / Port Greville/ Wards Brook responded to four structure fires on Pit Road, Joggins. As emergency personnel were responding to these fires, a fifth fire was detected at the Masonic lodge building on Highway 242 in Joggins. As a result of the proximity to the lodge, the Baptist church caught fire and sustained smoke and water damage.

In total, five structures were completely destroyed. One responding firefighter from the River Hebert Fire Department received non-life threatening injuries. All of the destroyed structures were unoccupied. Fire investigators deemed these fires to be suspicious. The investigation into the cause of the fires is continuing.
