Crime of the week – unsolved homicide, Dartmouth, N.S.

Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers and the Homicide Unit of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division are asking for the public’s help in solving the murder of Tanya Jean Brooks (aka Tanya Lynch). Tanya’s body was found near a Halifax school.

On May 11, 2009 at about 2:15 p.m., Tanya Jean Brooks’ body was found in a basement window well of St. Pat’s Alexandra Elementary School in Halifax. It was later determined that she was the victim of a homicide.

Tanya was known to frequent the Gottingen Street area, and investigators were able to trace her movements until 8:20 p.m. on May 10, 2009 when she left Halifax Regional Police Headquarters at 1975 Gottingen Street. Investigators believe that Tanya knew her assailant(s) and that there are witnesses out there who have not yet come forward. They urge anyone who witnessed anything suspicious around the school or has information about Tanya’s murder who has yet to speak with investigators to break their silence.

This case is also part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program which offers cash rewards of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible for specific major unsolved crimes. Anyone with information relating to this or other major unsolved crimes can call toll free 1-888-710-9090. Callers must provide their name and contact information, and may be called to testify in court. All calls will be recorded. The amount of the award will be based on the investigative value of the information provided.
