Crime Prevention Award Nominations Open

Know someone dedicated to preventing crime in their community? Help recognize their work with a nomination for a Minister’s Award for Leadership in Crime Prevention.

There are many ways to prevent crime, from developing partnerships and programs that address root causes, to providing leadership in the community to supporting others in their efforts.

“To prevent crime we must all work together,” said Justice Minister Lena Diab. “It takes the co-operation of many, communities, businesses, police and government, to provide supports and services that make a difference. There are several communities and organizations in Nova Scotia taking proactive approaches to crime prevention. These awards are a way to recognize their efforts and share their stories.”

This is the sixth year for the Minister’s Crime Prevention Awards. Don Spicer, executive director of Shelter Nova Scotia and a former Halifax Police superintendent, supports the awards and their goals.

“The Minister’s Award for Leadership in Crime Prevention is a great way to recognize the outstanding contribution to crime prevention by people in our community,” said Mr. Spicer. “This type of recognition helps to validate the work of our unsung heroes. I look forward to submitting nominations again this year.”

The Department of Justice is accepting nominations in six categories:
— Individual
— Youth (21 and under)
— Community Group or Organization
— Policing
— Media
— Business Community
