Colleen Hepburn has been appointed a Crown attorney in Yarmouth. Martin Herschorn, director of public prosecutions, announced the appointment today, Nov. 1.

“Ms. Hepburn’s solid background in criminal law and her years of prosecutorial experience make her a valuable addition to our team of Crown attorneys,” said Mr. Herschorn.

A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Ms. Hepburn graduated from Laurentian University in Sudbury in 1987 with an honours bachelor of arts in English and from the University of Guelph in 1988 with a master of arts in English. She taught English in various post-secondary schools before entering Dalhousie Law School in Halifax.

Ms. Hepburn graduated in 1998 and articled with the criminal section of the Crown Law Office in Toronto.

Ms. Hepburn was appointed an assistant Crown attorney in Toronto in 2000 where she concentrated on the prosecution of child abuse offences. Later, as Crown counsel, she argued appeals before the Ontario Court of Appeal and worked on Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty matters.

In 2010 Ms. Hepburn accepted a secondment as a Crown prosecutor in Peace River, Alta. She later returned to Ontario as an assistant Crown attorney in the Sudbury area.

Ms. Hepburn is a contributing author of Crimes Against Children: Prosecution and Defence.

She has presented to the Toronto Police Service on a variety of topics, was a lecturer at Toronto John School and was a demonstrator in the trial advocacy course at Ontario Crown School.
