Cyclists: Secure Your Ride

Halifax Regional Police is reminding cyclists to secure their bicycles following a number of thefts in Halifax.

Since May 1, HRP has received 14 reports of bicycles being stolen in the Halifax area. Some of the thefts have occurred around public buildings (hospitals and libraries) and businesses (hotels and universities).

Police remind cyclists of the following bicycle security tips:

• If possible, lock your bike in a well-lit, well-travelled area.

• Secure your ride by using a quality lock.

• When securing it, lock the frame of the bike (not just the wheel) to a sturdy and secure object it can’t be lifted over, such as a bike rack or fence post. Avoid locking it to a chain link fence or other objects that can be easily cut or broken.

• Get the tightest fit possible. The less room inside the u-lock or chain the better as it makes it difficult for thieves to use their tools.

• Position your lock with the keyhole facing down.

• If your bike is stolen, report the theft to the police immediately. Be able to fully describe your bike, including the serial number, make, model, speed, colour and any distinguishing markings.

• Take a photo of your bike and serial number and keep it in a safe place.
