Dear Mr Syed,
First and foremost I wanted thank you for the race you have run as candidate for this great city of Toronto.
Himy, months ago when I came back I was part of the masses who thought politicians could not be trusted. I had been involved in politics when I was younger and had come to hate the backrooms of politics. I had come to hate the process. I felt that we the average citizen really did not make a difference. I had grown into a non-voting apaethic person. To be honest when I cast my ballot in the mayors race it was the first time I had voted in this the city of my birth. I didn’t vote for Lastman or Millar, or against them either. I simply didn’t care.
Mr. Syed, THANK YOU for showing me and many others that we can have a voice and that voice is important in this democratic process. I have learned much from you in the last 6 weeks since we first met. I am no longer that disillusioned woman who thinks the process is flawed. From watching you as you worked the Wellesley Fire incident and in the days immediately offered I saw how much one person can have an impact on life in this city. You rallied support, all while giving support and listening to the cares of the people. You reinstilled in my faith that one person can count. You helped me see my voice is important, and I too could share and make this city truely a better place.
When you were blocked from the major media in this city by the boys who control the dollars as you were seen as a “fringe” candiadate, I saw in you creativity,tenacity and humilty. While other candidates who were in the media eye were self serving you rose above and talked to the people after the debates and tweeted your responses so you could have a voice. You created your own voice. In doing so you rallied me and the votes of many more like me who looked for creative ways to share a better vision for this city.
Thank you for the platforms you put forth first that somehow ended up as policy statements of your opposition. We all know where “bike city” and “neighbourhood concils” come from. You truely do have a great vision for this city.Even they saw it.
I also wanted to thank you because I know that whatever happens tomorrow you will be and are a people’s mayor. I fully expect you to be rallying the people to want better and to be better in the years to come and for that I say Thanks Himy! I look forward to being just one more voice who believes that Toronto can be a better place for all of us, and that we can have a city were all voices can get heard.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the race you have run. My prayer for tommorrow is for a miracle but I have a feeling a vision that the voice of the people are just at the cusp of really being heard in this city.
