Detour Digest: Delays on Dunbrack, Bedford Highway, Nightly Paving on Hwy 118 and more (Posted October 3 2025)

As we head into the weekend and look at the week ahead, the city is buzzing with activity. Here’s a rundown of the road work and delays scheduled for HRM and beyond.

Right Here in HRM

Here’s what to watch for around the city, starting this weekend.

Weekend Work

  • Wright Avenue (Dartmouth): Crews will be doing road repairs between MacDonald and Ilsley avenues this Saturday, October 4th. Expect stop-and-go traffic from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., so maybe plan your Burnside trip accordingly.
  • Bedford Highway & Hammonds Plains Road: A long-term project to upgrade traffic signals kicks off Sunday night, October 5th. This will be overnight work from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., but you can expect an altered centerline and some stop-and-go traffic right at the intersection. This one will be going on until early December.
  • Highway 118 (Dartmouth): Get ready for some night paving. The northbound lanes of Highway 118 near the Portobello overpass will have lane drops starting Sunday, October 5th through Wednesday, October 8th. The work happens from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night.
  • Woodlawn Road, between Portland Street and Valleyfield Road. The work kicks off on Sunday, October 5th, running from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will be back each night from Monday, October 6th, to Thursday, October 9th, working from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Expect delays and lane reductions in the area during these overnight hours.

Starting Next Week

  • Faders Road (Bayside): This road will be closed on Monday, October 6th for paving, except for local traffic. A detour will be in place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m..
  • Lake Major Road: Expect stop-and-go traffic on Monday, October 6th, between the Ernst Mill Bridge and Highway 7 for road repairs. The work runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Dunbrack Street: Road repairs will cause lane reductions on Dunbrack between Lacewood Drive and Main Avenue on Monday, Oct. 6, and Tuesday, Oct. 7. The delays are expected from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. both days.

Ongoing Annoyances

  • Sackville Street Sinkhole: The emergency sinkhole repair near 5566 Sackville Street has been extended past its original finish time. Outbound traffic is for local access only between Dresden Row and South Park Street, so it’s best to keep avoiding the area if you can.
  • Highway 107 (Lower Sackville): The northbound on-ramp to Highway 102 at Exit 4C and the southbound on-ramp at the new overpass remain closed until October 31.
  • Peggys Cove Road: Lane reductions continue on weekdays from Indian Point Road to Trunk 3 until the end of November.
  • Crowell Road (East Lawrencetown): Expect single-lane traffic for construction between Route 207 and Marjorie Drive until October 31.

(Ed note: One late submission:

Woodlawn Road, between Portland Street and Valleyfield Road, Sunday, Oct. 5 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. (overnight work)

Monday, Oct. 6 to Thursday, Oct. 9 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night (overnight work)

Provincial Updates:

If you’re heading out of the city, here are a few things to keep in mind on the provincial highways.

  • Colchester County: Watch for single-lane traffic on Highway 102 southbound from Millbrook to Shortts Lake for paving until mid-December.
  • Guysborough County: The Pirate Harbour Bridge on Route 344 is down to one lane with traffic signals until just before Christmas.
  • Hants County: Be prepared for a lane reduction on Highway 101 westbound past Exit 8 from October 6th to the 13th for guardrail repairs.
  • Pictou County: There’s a lane drop on Highway 104 Westbound at DM 171 to be aware of.

There are many other ongoing projects across the province, so for the latest info before you head out, it’s always a good idea to check the province’s 511 service.
