Distracted driving charges increases 200 per cent

There has been a 200 per cent increase in distracted driving charges in RCMP-policed areas of the Halifax Regional Municipality January 1 to March 31 compared to the same time last year.

In 2018, members laid 27 distracted driving charges in RCMP-policed areas of the Halifax Regional Municipality January through March. This year, the number is 81.

“Looking at your phone while driving may seem like no big deal, but it could have huge consequences,” says Cpl. Lisa Croteau of Halifax District RCMP. “It could be the difference between safely avoiding an oncoming car and getting in a head-on collision.”

The RCMP will continue to target distracted drivers through enforcement in order to help make roadways safer.

In Nova Scotia, the fine for using a cellphone while operating a motor vehicle is $237.50. If convicted, four points are added to the driver’s license.

If you believe someone is driving in a way that is an immediate threat to public safety, please call 911 when it is safe to do so. Include as much detail as possible, such as the location, direction of travel, vehicle and driver description and license plate number.

Please don’t risk your safety and the safety of those around you. Distracted driving for any amount of time — even just one second — could have permanent consequences.
