Don’t Trust The B—- In Apartment 23 – Mad Women

Molly has two mommies.

Last night’s episode of …Apartment 23 didn’t feature my favorite June and Chloe storyline we’ve seen yet, but it DID feature the best James Van Der Beek storyline so far – one that had me laughing out loud.

Chloe was approaching her “busy season” – a hectic three days in which she’d made a boatload of money doing something sketchy with foreign officials at the UN. Chloe was also proving her irresponsibility by ignoring and thus killing a plant, a goldfish and, yes,an elderly neighbor. So to deal with her growing list of responsibilities and inspired by June’s new unpaid internship, Chloe decided to adopt a foster child and have her work as a personal assistant.

This stuff was the kind of laugh-out-loud, wacky, funny-because-it’s-so-wrong material that I love about …Apt. 23. It was the June stuff that lost me. I like the idea that June is a Type A personality that ended up giving herself a nervous breakdown by taking on too many tasks. It’s a bit of a trope, but Dreama Walker really sold the crazy and I like that her character is just as flawed as Chloe’s but in the opposite way. I just didn’t buy that June would actually, seriously try and be a parent to the new foster kid and start referring to herself as a mother. So the storyline, while delivering a lot of laughs, didn’t quite do it for me.

Copycat!

I loved the JVDB stuff. He signed on for a body-swap movie where he’d switch bodies with his 12-year-old daughter. Creepy, right? But he’d do anything to work with Kiernan Shipka, the precocious young actress who plays Sally Draper on Mad Men. I love Kiernan Shipka. She’s done a hilarious FunnyorDie.com video, her Twitter feed is adorable, and even SurisBurnBook.tumblr.com loves her, accurately musing on Twitter that Shipka “is the Meryl Streep of tween actresses.”

Even though “Parent Trap” wasn’t a smashing success for me, I thought there were a ton of hilarious lines and moments. Check out a few below, and then head to the comments to tell me what you thought.

  • Chloe manipulating June into coming across as a lovely lesbian couple.
  • “FYI, Molly… we have a no flip flop policy, so I’m going to need to see you in something with a closed toe.”
  • “That’s the premise of The Blind Side!”
  • “You sucked in Flower Drum Song!”
  • I’m loving JVDB’s assistant Luther – while I still don’t find the neighbors funny, he and Eli have been great supporting characters
