Double fines for speeding in school zones

Provincial release:
With another school year fast approaching, the province is taking steps to remind drivers and pedestrians to pay attention at crosswalks and intersections.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal will be installing signs to highlight that speed fines are double in school zones. Municipalities will be offered the signs at no cost.

"We are showing genuine leadership through this important safety initiative that will remind drivers that there are serious consequences if you are caught speeding in a school zone," said Bill Estabrooks, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal. "We encourage municipalities to take advantage of this opportunity to make their communities safer."

"We are pleased that the province is taking this step to make crosswalk safety a priority," said Glenna Casavechia, president CUPE local 4814, which represents crossing guards. "I hope this will remind drivers to think twice before speeding through a school zone."

Starting this month, print and online advertising will run province-wide to make drivers and pedestrians aware that crosswalk safety is a shared responsibility.

For more information on crosswalk safety and to view the ads, visit the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal website at www.gov.ns.ca/tran.
