Drive cautiously Remembrance Day weekend
Nova Scotia RCMP is asking motorists to drive cautiously this Remembrance Day weekend.
In 2018, Remembrance Day fell on a Sunday, making it a long weekend. There were 95 collisions in Nova Scotia RCMP area that weekend, the most of any long weekend in 2018. This year Remembrance Day falls on a Monday, making it another long weekend.
The most common factors in collisions on Remembrance Day 2018 weekend were wildlife on the roadway and aggressive driving.
“We want to make sure everyone arrives home safely this weekend,” says S/Sgt. Jeff West of Nova Scotia RCMP. “Please be on the lookout for wildlife, drive at safe speeds, wear your seat belt, avoid distractions and always drive sober.”
There are ways for motorists to protect against collisions with wildlife. Some of these include:
- Check that your lights are working before driving.
- Travel during daylight hours if possible.
- Avoid distractions and focus all your attention on driving. If you’re constantly scanning the road ahead, you’re more likely to see an animal.
- If you see an animal near the roadway, take it as a warning that there may be more nearby.
- If you notice a dead animal on the roadway that is an immediate threat to traffic, please call police.
