Driver caught after attempting to evade police – Mahone Bay

On August 28 at 5 p.m., Lunenburg District RCMP responded to a complaint of an impaired driver.  The caller told police a man was impaired and he was attempting to drive his vehicle.

Police responded, located the vehicle and stopped it. The driver left the area during the traffic stop. He left the area at a high rate of speed, estimated by police to be nearing 100 km/hr in a 50 km/hr school zone.

Another RCMP officer in the area attempted to stop the vehicle, and the driver effectively forced the police vehicle off the roadway and nearly struck it in his attempt to avoid being stopped.

The vehicle again fled from the area at a high rate of speed and in the wrong lane along Hwy. 3, towards Martins River.

RCMP officers located the vehicle a short time later in Martins River. It was abandoned near a residence. The driver was nowhere to be found. Near 9:30 p.m., an anonymous call to police indicated that the driver had been dropped off at his home.

Police attended, and arrested the man when he exited the home. He was very uncooperative and struggled with police. He was eventually transported to the Cookville RCMP Detachment and was held in custody until his court appearance on August 29.

Colin Charles Fickes, 44, of Martins River, has been charged with:

  • Dangerous Driving
  • Flight from Police
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Breach of Recognizance (2 counts)

He was released from custody following his court appearance and is scheduled to appear in Bridgewater Provincial Court on September 18.

The investigation is ongoing.
