Police have charged a 21-year-old Bedford man with Attempted Murder after he caused four serious collisions within a five-minute time span yesterday afternoon.
Yesterday at approximately 3:00 p.m., police officers from Ingonish RCMP responded to reports of four separate motor vehicle collisions involving the same vehicle on White Point Road in South Harbour. A preliminary investigation determined that 21-year-old Daniel Keays of Bedford was driving a Honda van and intentionally collided with 3 different vehicles – one SUV and two motorcycles – narrowly missing a fourth vehicle before penetrating a guard rail and being immobilized. The events happened within a 4-kilometre stretch of the roadway and a five-minute time frame. All parties were unknown to each other.
First, Keays collided with a SUV driven by a 49-year-old woman and a 5-year-old boy as a passenger. Keays then fled the scene and hit a motorcycle, causing the two riders to be ejected. Next, Keays left this scene and hit another motorcycle, causing the two riders to be ejected. Keays continued, dragging the motorcycle approximately one km before driving through an intersection and narrowly missing another vehicle. Keays then crashed through a guard rail and his vehicle was immobilized. Keays assaulted two bystanders attempting to help following the crash. Keays while in custody also assaulted police officers. Victims suffered various injuries but thankfully, none were life-threatening.
Keays is in custody and is scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. facing numerous charges including:
· Attempt to Commit Murder
· Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm
· Failure to Stop at Scene of an Accident
· Assault Causing Bodily Harm
· Assault of a Peace Officer Causing Bodily Harm
· Refusal of Drug Recognition Expert Demand
